My Conversation with Spring
I called her up the other morning.
Brrrrring.
Spring (in a groggy, sleepy voice): Yeesss?
Me: Oh I'm sorry, were you asleep?
Spring: Uh, yeah, it's January.
Me: Well it's time to get up. I need you.
Spring: What are you talking about? It's the middle of the night.
Me: Exactly. It's cold and dark and I need you now.
Spring: Can't a girl get some sleep?
Me: I'm sorry, but no. You need to get up, put on your best floral dress, and get your blossoming butt over here right now.
Spring: It doesn't work that way.
Me: I don't care, I'm desperate. And cold. (sobbing) So...very...cold.
Spring: Have you been drinking?
Me: Well what do you expect, I'm depressed!
Spring: There are things you can do, you know. Make a comforting soup. Call a cheerful friend. Read an entertaining book. I don't even mind if you cheat on me and buy some daffodils out-of-season.
Me: It's not the same and you know it. I beg of you.
Spring: You'll just have to be patient. Now if you'll excuse me, I need my beauty sleep.
Click.
You can't say I didn't try.

How cold is it there?
I'm in Chicago. We're like Spring's baby she gave to adoption when she was 13 and it's all just a bad memory she'd prefer to forget.
I've got some bulbs coming up in the garden that certainly think it's just about spring.
My neighbors are also under the delusion that it's spring because they were mowing their yard last week.
Me, I'm just happy to see the sun!
Seattle has nothing on Chicago for cold, that's for sure.
But here's the thing. I am not a fan of cold weather no matter what. And it seems that every year the winters here get a little colder.
I'm with Angie. Bring back the warm!
Hehe, funny comment RE.
An hour after I published this post the sun came out, which certainly helps. I think it got up to 40 today as the high. But it's supposed to be slushy rain half the week. It's probably pointless for me to complain to someone in Chicago. I can hear your tiny violin right now.
What I should do is set my daily weather checker to colder parts of the country so that when I go outside here, it doesn't seem so bad.
Bev, I have a few bulbs poking out as well, and I tell you it's so nice to see them! I planted a bunch right outside my bedroom window so I could see their progress every morning.
Chris, I hope you take the winter off from riding your bike to work!
I am getting a little tired of having to scrap ice off my windshield in the morning, Spring!
When I returned to Brooklyn from Portland after the holidays all I could think was "I don't care if it is cold and windy here, at least there is sunshine." I find myself frequently gazing up at the sun--like a cat lounging in front of the window--even when the wind is whipping at my face. It was so cloudy and depressing during my time on the other coast; I'll take the cold if a little sunshine comes with it. However, I withhold the right to take back that comment when it is twenty degrees outside (colder with the wind-chill), and I'm freezing my butt off walking to the subway in the morning, or my landlord has decided, again, that heat isn't implicit in our rental agreement.
So happy to hear you have some sun over there, Em! :-)
